Fieldfare Farming Futures Conference Proves Inspirational

The challenges of farming in the future were examined by six speakers at an innovative farming conference hosted by the Whitchurch based Fieldfare Farmers at the end of June.

The event “Fieldfare Farming Futures 2011” was held at Dearnford Lake, near Whitchurch, and attracted an audience of 130 including delegates from Lancashire and Warwickshire.

Professor Jonathan Scurlock, an NFU Government Advisor, and Neil Adams of the European Food and Farming Partnership examined the challenges of today such as population growth, global warming and resource pressure. Technologies adopted by farmers in the past to meet challenges were looked at for lessons, and the incentives needed for future progress.

Jim Shanks, a dairy farmer from Hawick and Nuffield scholar (NSch), spoke on developing farm energy solutions. Biogas, wind generation and hydrogen technologies were reviewed as sources of renewable on-farm energy.

Cornish farmer’s son Ian Tremaine, NSch, considered how algae could be used to feed the world whilst Lindsay Hargreaves, NSch, from East Anglia took a fascinating look at the world of genetics, soil science and bioengineering for farming answers.

Carol Ford, a food marketing executive with more than 20 years experience, described how the internet is changing the way businesses connect with each other and direct to the consumer using social media such as Facebook.

Rob Bebbington, conference organiser, said: “This was a most thought provoking and interesting conference with top class speakers who were inspirational for their audience. It proved a great success and we are hoping to make it an annual event. I would like to thank our sponsors EFFP and NFU Market Drayton for their support.”
