Staffordshire Charity Dinner
March 2010
BBC’s Countryfile’s Adam Henson was the star attraction at the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) annual Staffordshire dinner when almost 500 farmers and friends at the enjoyed an evening of food and entertainment at Staffordshire Showground on Thursday 18th March. The evening raised over £7,800 to help support those in the local farming community who face need, hardship or distress.
As the guest speaker, Adam spoke about his background, his involvement in Countryfile, Lambing Live, the Cotswold Farm Park and the positive outlook for farming. He also kindly helped the committee with the raffles that took place during the evening. Barclays Corporate generously match-funded the raffles to the value of £1,500. Other generous donations on the evening were received by Stone & Eccleshall NFU, and the County NFU.
Entertainment was also provided by Staffordshire Young Farmers who provided a sketch show which was enjoyed by all. Even Adam laughed at the jokes referring to the lack of mud on his wellies!
The money raised on the night, thanks to the dedicated RABI supporters, helps offset more than £28,000 expended in Staffordshire each year to assist retired and disabled farmers, through regular grants, home help and emergency relief grants; as well as working farming families facing hardship, through emergency grants and the Gateway Project.
Chief of the dinner organisers and RABI Staffordshire committee member Elsie Fallows said: “We had an excellent attendance, with tickets selling out immediately. The dinner is a very important fundraising event for our cause and we’re glad of all of the help we receive locally, including from auctioneer Mr F.C. Hollis and all the donations of auction prizes.”
