Wine Pairing Evening

January 2012

The Cambridgeshire committee have had an idea about arranging a 'Wine Pairing Evening' later in the year, a wine merchant comes along to a dinner and for a nominal fee supplies selected wines to complement each course, i.e.. Sparkling wine as an aperitif, a couple of wines that will go with the starter, two or three to complement the main course and a couple to complement the desert and then finally a couple to go with the cheese course.

The committee had a trial run to assess the suitability of the function and unanimously agreed it would make a great evening event which they are hoping to organise later in the year.

Smithfield 2011 at the East of England Showground

December 2011

RABI trophy won by Texel lamb from Hereford

The Smithfield RABI charity sheep class once again attracted a first class entry of prime lambs at the East of England Smithfield Festival on the showground at Peterborough on Saturday 3rd December.

As a result of the generosity of the eight exhibitors, who donated lambs, and of the auctioneers, Newark Livestock Market, who waived their commission, 100% of the sale price went to RABI, raising over £920.

The winner of the RABI perpetual trophy was an excellent pure bred Texel wether lamb from R J Slade of Almeley, Hereford that sold for a top price of £170. Second in the class was a pure bred Southdown wether lamb from Wakeham-Dawson & Harmer of Lewes, East Sussex, which made £103, with a pure bred Charollais ewe lamb from J & C Maxwell of Ely, Cambridgeshire, which sold for £118, placed third. Two other ewe lambs (brought for breeding), from Eifion Hughes of Carmarthenshire and C Horrell Ltd of Peterborough, made £158 and £128 respectively.

The RABI class was introduced to the Smithfield Show in 2004, when it was in Earls Court, and has been held at all subsequent ‘Smithfields’, with several exhibitors having supported the class since its inception.

Our thanks go to the Royal Smithfield Club, the East of England Agricultural Society, the auctioneers, the NSA and the exhibitors for their continued support.
