Carol Service, Penrith Auction Mart

8 December 2011

The RABI national carol service was held in Penrith Auction Mart on Thursday 8th December. Entitled ‘A Christmas celebration of the Cumbrian farming community’, the service was conducted by the Bishop of Carlisle, the Rt Revd James Newcome, assisted by the Rt Revd John Oliver, honorary chaplain RABI, and the Revd Richard Teal, chair of the Cumbria Methodist District.

Penrith Town Band provided a wonderful musical accompaniment with the Kirkoswald Methodist Circuit Choir leading the singing. The service was followed by Cumbrian hotpot and mulled wine, which was most welcome on such a cold night.

Despite the awful weather conditions nearly 200 people attended raising funds and more importantly awareness of RABI.

Many thanks must go to the auction mart, Pat Turnbull and the other ladies from the Cumbria committee for transforming the main ring with festive decoration and Derek and Catherine Lomax.

Paraglider Pilots raise £1000 for Cumbrian Farmers.

August 2011

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution in Cumbria received a boost to funds at the weekend from members of the Cumbria Soaring Club. The Club is the recognised organisation for paragliding and hang gliding in the Lake District.

Every year they host a national competition, the Lakes Charity Classic, which has the combined aims of competition, a social gathering and most importantly, raising money for charity. Over the 21 year period of the competition the club has raised over £35.000 for charities with a strong local connection to the flying activities of the club.

This year in appreciation of the essential role of the farming community in managing and preserving the land over which they fly the members chose the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution as one of the recipients as a grant-making charity that supports members of the farming community facing need, hardship or distress. R.A.B.I Regional Officer Georgina Lamb commented “The charity is delighted to receive such a generous donation from the soaring club and the money will be spent supporting Cumbrian farming families where last year in the county, we spent in excess of £50,000.

The recent Grasmere Sports and Show in which the Club was competing provided an opportunity for the RABI North West Regional Officer, Georgina Lamb, to receive the cheque for £1000 from club members Richard Jennings and Chris Field while in the background, pilot Rick Livingstone wrestles his paraglider in the gusty conditions.
