Treasure Hunt

10 May 2010

A record number of treasure hunters took part in Lancashire’s annual event. Seventy five people searched for clues and answered questions in and around the spectacular Stoneyhurst College, Hurst Green deep within the Ribble Valley.

Last year’s winner Mrs Susan Whitwell kindly agreed to set the route this year (which is obligatory for the winner!!) so thanks go to her for re-engerising this RABI fundraiser.

Praying for good weather almost paid off as the rain stayed away but the night was bitterly cold! The night was topped off with meat pie, chips and peas plus raffle at the Bayley Arms.

The evening raised £200 and winning team “the discoverers” will, fingers crossed, organise next year’s event.

Lancashire YFC Bike Ride

April 2010

The heroes of 2010 so far have to be members of the Lancashire YFC who bravely decided to cycle from Blackpool to Torquay raising money for RABI. The trip was the idea of Katie Delaney of Bury YFC who, along with the help of 9 others, pulled off an amazing 300 mile bike ride pedalling around 80 miles a day.

Hours of gruelling practice plus puncture repair training were essential and a very supportive road crew made the trip possible. It was very unfortunate that the Icelandic volcano ash meant two of the cyclists were trapped in France when the journey took place; however, the young farmers have raised £3,000 which they should be extremely proud of as well as sharing an amazing experience together to help farming families across Lancashire.

Kings Moss Ploughing Match

February 2010

A Ploughing Day and Farmers Market was held at Fir Tree Farm, Kings Moss  by kind permission of Edwina and Alan Abbott. A tidy sum was raised for RABI from collections in the car park.

Clitheroe Swing Band

February 2010

Not to be outdone by Cheshire, Lancashire also had a musical entrance to 2010 with a swing band night. Pupils from Clitheroe Grammar School entertained an audience with a brilliant array of swinging tunes at Samlesbury Memorial Hall.

The only hiccup being our supper lost in the freezing fog for 20 minutes! Apple pies made by the wonderful ladies of the committee were, as ever a treat and made up for lost time.

The evening was a hit thanks to former Lancashire County secretary Stephen Fawcett. Stephen stood down from the committee this year but I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for many years of support. Lancashire now looks forward to their annual dinner dance, Myerscough College Open Day, Sunday Lunch and much more.

Farmhouse Breakfast

January 2010

Merseyside cooked up a treat for the first time ever as R.A.B.I trustee Lorna Tyson hosted a wonderful morning at her stunning guest house, Mere Brook on the Wirral.

Thirty guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast cooked to perfection and listened to the CEO of Wirral Borough Council and Head of Tourism discuss putting Wirral and more importantly, food on the map.

The morning raised over £450 which we were thrilled to receive. Many thanks go to Lorna and Donald for their hospitality – same time again next year???
