Comprehensive Improvement Plans

Exciting developments at RABI's Suffolk residential home are now underway. The trustees have undertaken a full review of the home and, after careful consideration, decided to redevelop the site to create more residential accommodation and modernise the home, whilst retaining the character of the building.

At present Manson House has 22 single bedrooms, only a few of which have en-suite facilities, and there are also 19 rentable apartments. The house, a substantial listed Grade II* Georgian residence spanning three floors, has an air of homeliness rather than that of a purpose-built institution, but as a home for the elderly, with narrow staircases and only one lift, it has its challenges.

Following a detailed survey of the main building in 2009, it was confirmed that, while structurally it was basically in good order, repairs costing over £100,000 were required. After extensive informal discussions with the planning department and English Heritage a suitable redevelopment to best meet all the necessary criteria was agreed.

A planning application, to increase the number of residential rooms in Manson House to 31 (all en-suite) and to replace some of the other buildings on site to provide 22 rentable apartments and a guest house, was submitted in March 2011. Planning consent was granted on the 8th July and our architects have completed the building regulations requirements.

The project, which is estimated will cost in the region of £2.8 million (plus VAT), is expected to take two years to complete. The work will be carried out in phases designed to cause as little disturbance as possible to the residents and tenants who will be living on site throughout.
