R.A.B.I already helps 2,000 farming families in short or long-term financial difficulty in England and Wales each year and the number of new people contacting us, particularly working farmers, is growing.

Because we know we still don’t reach everyone in need, we launched the ‘Just Ask!’ campaign at our AGM in May 2012 to raise greater awareness of our work and the different kinds of support we offer.

At the same time we have made it easier for people to contact us, either on their own or someone else’s behalf, by introducing a freephone number for our confidential helpline (mobile costs vary according to the service provider).

Callers to the 0300 303 7373 number can speak to R.A.B.I staff during office hours Monday to Friday. Evenings, weekends and bank holidays the line diverts to the helpline run by Farm Crisis Network, which provides pastoral care to farming people in difficulty, and information is then forwarded to R.A.B.I.

To tell people more about what we do, over the course of the next year we will highlight a particular aspect of our work every month.

Trish Pickford

Head of welfare Trish Pickford said: “Our message is simple: if you or someone you know works or has worked in agriculture and is in short or long-term financial difficulty, help is only a phone-call away – Just Ask!

“Not only do we want people who are directly employed in farming to know about the breadth of our work and the different ways we can help, we also want people like friends, relatives, consultants and suppliers, as well as doctors, vets, social workers and members of the clergy, to know so that they can help too.

“Whether it’s a matter of encouraging someone to contact us or calling on their behalf, the answer is simple - Just Ask!”
